You may think I’m crazy, but do you know one thing I love most about being pregnant outside of the actual baby? It’s the maternity clothes! Just hear me out one minute. When else in your adult life is it cute for you to have a big stomach? Not to mention the clothes are so comfortable.
The thing with maternity clothes is that it can be a bit tricky to find cute ones. Anything you want to know about what to expect when you are expecting or newborn care can easily be found on the Internet or in books. But rarely do you come across good articles on where to find stylish maternity clothes. So I am here to help you out!
Before doing your shopping there are some things to keep in mind.
- If this isn’t going to be your last baby, you should try to opt for timeless pieces. Styles come and go, so if you’re buying maternity clothes now and are planning to have another baby a few years down the road, choose your clothes wisely. With your second (or 10th) baby, you don’t want your entire wardrobe to look outdated or to have to spend the money buying all new clothes.
- Find someone with whom you can share maternity clothes. My sister-in-law and I shared our maternity clothes. We were never pregnant at the same time, so the totes of clothes would travel to whoever was pregnant and then kept there until the other one needed them.
- Use statement accessories. I would wear the same base clothing pieces often but switch up my look by changing statement accessories like scarves and necklaces.
- Order your maternity clothes online. The last thing you want (at least the last thing I wanted) was to have to try on clothes in store while pregnant. So save your self the hassle of doing it publicly and try on clothes in the comfort of your own home. Also, the stores I recommend below all offer free shipping and returns if you meet certain requirements. Therefore, go ahead and order a ton and only keep your absolute favorites, returning the rest. (And preferably in a hurry so you don’t have a huge credit card bill.) 🙂
Places to shop:
ASOS- They are a British company that are great for dresses! I bought one dress from them for a formal auction dinner and two dresses for weddings. You can get some really cute stuff at inexpensive prices. So if you really want to opt for a trendy piece, check here.
Gap- I really like Gap for maternity jeans and shorts. They also have great basic tees that will fit well over your bump and will stay put.
Old Navy– I really like Old Navy for everyday dresses. They offer great prices and casual styles.
J.Crew Factory– I actually bought some non-maternity shift dresses that worked well to get me through my early months of pregnancy and are still being used by me now that I’m 6 weeks postpartum. I also got a few non-maternity sweaters and blazers from J.Crew Factory to dress up some of my Gap basics.
Target- I like Target for maternity tanks to wear under your clothes. They stay in place well so you’re not constantly having to pull them down. I also had luck with some other maternity pieces at a great price.
Nordstrom- If you are expecting, you need maternity Spanx. And my go to place for maternity Spanx is Nordstrom. These help to keep your dresses smooth without putting pressure on your bump. They are also great to wear if you suffer from varicose veins while pregnant as they offer a lot of support.
Best of luck on your shopping adventures and congrats on expecting your precious baby!
