I LOVE a good rainy day. There’s nothing like watching the wrath of mother nature as she brings in a loud, action packed thunderstorm. On those days, I love to curl up on the couch with the kiddos, watch movies and eat popcorn. But, as much as I love to lounge around the house on a rainy day….my kids get bored about 32.61 minutes in!
Here I have listed some rainy day activities that you can do with your kids. And this list isn’t one of those unrealistic ones…like build a rocket ship out of popsicle sticks, panty house and peacock feathers! Most of these activities you can do with things already in your house. There’s no trip to the store necessary.
GO PLAY IN THE RAIN! This one requires very little, to no effort, except maybe an extra load of laundry! As long as there is no lightning, get out there and jump in the puddles. (With or without your rain gear) Mom, you get out there too! This is one of those memories that will last a lifetime with your children. I may be 35 but I love playing in the rain as much as my kids.
SCAVENGER HUNT. Print out this easy scavenger hunt list to occupy the kids. They just need to find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. The little ones will need some help from Mom or Dad with this. My kids love a good scavenger hunt and getting a reward (it’s almost always a popsicle) at the end of the search.SOLO CUP FORT. We all have a supply of plastic cups laying around from all the birthday parties or holidays that we have hosted. Have the kids make a fort out of them or see how high they can build a wall made of plastic cups. This sometimes leads to Keegan and Cooper fighting so I usually divide the cups up equally and they all can build whatever they want.
CREATE A BOOK. Create a story book with your kids. Write a beautiful or silly story and be sure to make illustrations. This is one of my kids’ favorite things to do. Our stories usually revolve around very important subjects like Farts or Poop. (We’re classy like that! LOL)
MICROWAVE A BAR OF SOAP. This experiment is fun and quick but can only be done with IVORY soap. Just put it on a plate and microwave it for 2 minutes. Watch it grow and grow and grow! Then, let the kids play with it…rinse their hands with water and wham! your kids’ hands have never been cleaner! LOL (It’s really a win-win activity…fun and clean hands!)
BAKE COOKIES. Baking is always a good activity to do with your kids any day, whether it is raining or not. Kids love to make something that you can eat and compliment them on. There is nothing in the world like seeing the pride radiating from your kids’ face when you taste what they’ve made and you tell them it is delicious!
NERF GUN SHOOTING RANGE. If your kids are a bit older, take those plastic cups that I mentioned earlier and make a Nerf Gun shooting range. Stack 6 or 10 of them up in a pyramid and try your best to hit them. Or line them up and see who can shoot the most in 30 seconds. I like to partake in this contest too!
READ!! Sit and read with your kids. I know…this sounds lame but I am horrible at taking time to sit down and read with my kids. No matter the age, kids love to read to Mom or be read to by Mom.
I hope this list has your family creating your own Rainy Day memories. Enjoy the day, no matter how dark and gloomy it is.
Hugs,
Rachel
