Welcome to June! We are very excited about our May book review of Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon!
Summary
It is 1853 and Naomi May is a young widow just setting out with her family on a cross country journey from Missouri to California. With only minimal supplies, a few horses and their covered wagon, the trek is definitely not going to be easy.
There are lengthy stops of the journey to care for those that are sick with cholera and to repair damaged wagons, but the May family stays with their “train” throughout.
Along the way Naomi meets John Lowry, a half Pawnee man who is struggling to find his identity. Before long, they are inseparable. Shortly after they wed, they are struck by tragedy. When an Indian tribe attacks, they become separated. Their journey to find each other and become whole again is heartbreaking and beautiful!
While reading this book I couldn’t help but think of the luxuries that we currently have. A very long any exhausting day for this family consisted of being jostled in a wagon in order to cross a mere four miles. It is true entertainment to be transported back in time before cellphones and running water.
Rating
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Where the Lost Wander is a great historical novel! If you are a child of the 80’s/90’s, this is the book of your Oregon Trail playing dreams! I have many memories of sitting at our bulky family computer hoping my wagon was strong enough to ford the river! ? Who is with me?!
This novel brings back all of those Oregon Trail memories and adds life to them with strong characters and vivid descriptions. Where the Lost Wander is a book everyone will love!
Next Month
For the month of June, we will be reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.
This is a multigenerational novel that follows two twin sisters. One lives with her black daughter and the other passes for white…keeping her heritage a secret. Historical fiction that explores race and culture, this book seems like a must read! Join us in June for our Book-A-Month Reading Challenge!
