The May Book-a-Month Reading Challenge selection was Becoming by Michelle Obama. The choice of this book couldn’t have come at a better time!
“It’s all a process, steps along a path. Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor. Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there is more growing to be done.”
-Michelle Obama
Summary
This memoir was so inspiring! Michelle Obama shows us behind the scenes what it is like growing up on the south side of Chicago. Her grit and academic perseverance landed her at Princeton and eventually back in Chicago at a top corporate law firm. As fate would have it, not long after her first day, Barack Obama walked into her law office and she was assigned to be his mentor…The rest is history.
This intimate novel gives a glimpse into political family life and sacrifices that must be made to serve in government roles.
Once in the white house, Mrs. Obama made sure that family came first. She tells of the demands that come with living in the White House. It is fascinating to read about her day to day life there. Again and again, her and President Obama put family first.
Mrs. Obama didn’t just stop at being the first African American First Lady, she wanted change and took issues into her own hands. By expanding the White House garden, improving school lunches and championing her Let’s Move campaign, she dedicated herself to a healthier America.
Mrs. Obama has so much wisdom to share. As she states: “There is always more growing to be done!” I’m so glad we read this book!
