I have been reading primarily historical fiction for years now. Check my book reviews….you will find many historical books. This type of writing transforms you to a different time and place. I love to read the book and then do a little research to see which aspects of the story actually happened. Sometimes it is very surprising!
The Flight Girls is a debut novel by Noelle Salazar. It takes place in 1941 and follows a young female pilot, Audrey, as she enters the Women Airforce Service Pilots Program (WASP). There are great references to the WASP program, the Airforce and Pearl Harbor, but this is also definitely a love story. That is the part that makes historical fiction FUN!
In the past, I have found it hard to locate discussion questions on new books and authors. This makes it difficult if you are using the book for your book club or journaling. Well look no further…I have created 5 questions to get you talking about this book!!!
Discussion questions for The Flight Girls:
1)As Audrey challenges the status quo by becoming a female pilot, how do her family and friends react? Who are her biggest supporters and who question her abilities?
2) What was it like being a young woman in the 1940’s? Describe the female friendships that Audrey forms during this time. How do those friendships shape her? Also, which friend do you most identify with?
3) Audrey and James were drawn to each other due to their common goals, namely to never become “tied down”. How did their futures differ from what they had each expected?
4) Audrey’s faith in her friendship with James was challenged throughout the novel. How might you have reacted to the absence of letters and the proposal from Carter? Would your choice have possibly been different?
5) The members of the WASP program experience so much together. Through joys and extreme loss, how do they remain loyal in their service to America? Could you have had the same perseverance?
Ok, actually that is way more than 5, but that is how it goes with discussion questions! If you have ever read the questions at the back of the book, you’ll know what I’m talking about! ?
